Angela Carter: The modification of “Bluebeard”

When writing this paper I plan to make start a debate about whether Carter version of “Bluebeard” or Perrault’s version of “Bluebeard” is the better one. To do this I plan to answer the following questions: What is at stake in this fairy tale transformation? Why does the Carter make these changes? What is Carter trying to do when making these changes? How does the Carter respond to the earlier author? And of course “So what?” “Who cares?” In this paper I plan on supporting Carter’s version of “Bluebeard”. I will do this by comparing her work to Perrault’s and how the changes to the text make it a better story over all. Some many points I will be making are the role that women play in the different versions, the overall theme of the story, and how well the story does in presenting this theme. At the conclusion of this paper I would like to have made my point that Carters version of “Bluebeard” is a better writing story overall and the changes made to the text made the story better overall for the reader. I also want to point out the flaws that I see in Charles Perrault’s version of the story to strength my argument. In addition, I will use sources that will help with my agreement. The sources I picked criticize both Perrault and Carter. They sit both stories side by side and compare the stories. I would also like to try and put some biographical information about both Carter and Perrault which will be used to explain there writing techniques and why they write the way that they do. From there I would like to explain how Carter’s writing techniques are better then Perrault’s. Then go on to explain how that plays a part in her story beginning better then Perrault’s. In the end I am just trying to make the argument that Angela Carter’s version of “Bluebeard” (“The Bloody Chamber”) is an overall better story.

I believe that both Darnton and Bettelheim are right to an extent. Bettelheim is correct that fairy tales have morals that are used to teach children about life lessons, but they can also show the reader how life was back when these stories where written. I see fairy tales as a way to teach lessons, but they also let us get a look at how the world was back in the 17th century.
When writing this paper I will focus more on the fact that fairy tales are written to inform children about the world. This is shown in many of the fairy tales that we have read in class because many end with a moral at the end; showing us that the writer wants us to take something away from the texted. At the same time the writing also allows us to see how the world was like in the 17th century because when these stories where written the writers wrote their characters from this point in time. So it would be impossible not to have historical events in the writing.
The issue I will most likely focus on will be royal power or social classes that appear in fairly tale. The historical content I use will focus more on Louis XIV and his court because this would support my issue the best. Perrault’s stories will probably be used to support this as well because many of his stories deal with the court and Louis XIV.

In the passage transitions are used effectively to connect sentences. For example, it says,“ My goal in this dissertation, however,…“by using the “however” transition not only does it allow the paper to flow while ,but is also allow the writer to introduce his own point of view. The pointing terms that are used in this passage are “their” and “this”. By including terms like this in the reading allows the paper to keep a good flow into each sentence. It also helps bring point from previous sentences. In addition, the author repeats himself throughout the passage which causes the paper to flow effectively because it brings back information from sentences in the beginning of the texted. This causes that sentences to interconnected make it an easier read. For example, the American Dream of rich-to-rags is presented several times and the exploitation of how people thing this is something that can happen easily is repeated several time. In conclusion, all of the following methods shown above help a paper to have a flow and connect ideas from all your sentences, which helps get your point across in an easy effective way.

The paper I wrote on Bruno Bettelheim’s article in The Classic Fairy Tales does address the “So What” factor to a point, but there is a lot of room for improvement. My paper was about the effect of fairy tales on children, so naturally children are mentioned throughout the entire paper. In my paper you can see that I do explain who fairy tales can affect children and the way they grow up, but I do not elaborate on this. For instance, in my second paragraph I say, “Children are able to learn from their favorite characters in stories and use them when they have to go out in the real world”. Even though I do say that it is important for children to see real world situations I do not explain why this is so or what would happen if they did not know this information. This causes the “So What” factor to be weak in my paper because even though the problem is addressed, without a good explanation to back it up no one will care about what you are trying to say. By putting important details that explain your argument is will cause your paper to be more memorable and have a greater impact. For example, if I were to show details about how gruesome fairy tales have affected children while growing up and as adults, more would care about my argument that children should not be exposed to these types of fairy tales.
The “Who Cares” factor can be seen throughout my paper because I do address that children are effected by fairy tales and due to this parents should watch what their children reads. I do not say this directly in my paper, but it is implied. For instance, I say, “… children do not need to be exposed to horror…” I could explain more on this point by saying why this can affect children and why parents would care about what their children are reading. Just by extending on little things like this it would cause my paper to be more effected in getting my message across. By putting memorable examples within the paper, it will cause the paper to be remembered and cause the reader to care about what you are saying, especially if they can relate to it.
In short, my paper did address “Who Cares” and “So What”, but by elaborating more on both of these points it would have caused my paper and ideas to be more effected, because I would have a memorable paper that related to my audience.

While reading both versions of “Riguet with the Tuft” you could see many difference between the two stories. First of all the first story has more of a back story then the second. The second story just goes right into telling the story, but the first talks about the family of the beautiful girl and ugly son. Also, the fist story talks about another sister that was very ugly, but this sister got more attention than the pretty one because of her intelligence. Although both stories have Riguet with the Tuft giving the pretty girl intelligence in exchange for marriage, some differences pop up again. For instance, when Riguet comes back after the year of waiting, he become handsome once the princess agrees to marry him, in the first story. In the second the princess falls in love with another and when Riguet comes back she chooses to stay with him so that she can keep her beauty. Then she goes onto visit her other lover and grow to hate Riguet. After Riguet finds out about this he makes himself look like her lover, causing to princess to live with two princes because she could not tell which on was her husband.
Both stories forces on beauty a lot. The second story show this because at the end she just settled for both princes because they both looked the same. In the first story she chooses to marry him when he becomes more handsome. Even though they have differences the same moral seems to be presented in both. The moral meaning looks and intelligence both matter.

At the being of the paper I had a general idea of how I was going to approach it. After reading the article several times and listening to the discussions in class about Bettelheim I decided that I agree with him to a point, but some aspects I do not agree with. The being of my paper progressed from this because I knew what I wanted to talk about and how I would go about supporting this in my paper.
As I began to write the paper I looked over the article multiple times to make sure I understood it completely. Then I began to look back on the fairy tales we have read so that I could use some of the stories as support for my take of the article. I also knew that my paper would have an opening closing and tow supporting paragraphs in the middle. One would support what Bettelheim says to a point and the other would explain where I believe he is wrong.
While writing I noticed that it was difficult to write from to perspective. For example, because I agree and disagree with Bettelheim I sometimes feel that I contradict myself in some ways which will affect my paper as a hole if the problem is not fixed. I also feel that I should add more detail and examples to my paper so that my agreement is strong and makes sense. I feel that as a whole the paper is not very difficult, it is straight to the point and if you have a good argument there is no reason you will not do well on it. In addition, the fact that the paper only has to be 2-3 pages contributed to the fact that it will not be difficult if you have a good argument.
I believe peer review was effect because it allowed someone else to look at the paper in a different way and see things that I have missed in my writing or need to add. Also, by listen to her read my paper out load I could heard the parts that made sense and the parts that could use some work. In conclusion, I see peer review as only another way to help in the writing process.

Life is hard, it is a simple fact that will never change; there will always be bumps in the road that you will have to overcome, but there is a little piece of live that we have that is care free, and that is childhood. In The Classic Fairy Tales Bruno Bettelheim has an article that suggests that fairly tales should show life’s hard lessons to prepare them for the future, but I believe this to be untrue. There is plenty of time to teach children how life is but they are only given little time to live a life that doesn’t have all of the hard aches that adults have to carry. Some might say that children should be prepare for the “real world” and that is true, but this should be done when they are a older. It is just unfair to take away the innocents of children by putting adult situations in their beloved stories; in some way it is just robbing them of a chance to be a kid. Bettelheim says the stories,”….confront the child squarely with the basic human predicaments.”, but this is unreasonable to expect a child to become adults at such an early age. The best way to give them the information they need gradual as they get older; not but polluting their stories with the hardship “adults” have to handle.

Growing up is hard for everyone; life throws many things at you and it’s hard to deal with them, but there is a way to prepare for all of the situations that are throw at us every day and that is being informing about life before we have to find out about it on our own. Bruno Bettelheim’s article in The Classic Fairy Tales clearly explains that children should learn about the good and bad aspects of life. He believes that by telling them fairly tales it,”….confronts the child squarely with the basic human predicaments.” Most parents do not believe in telling their children about life and would rather have them believe that every person has some good in them, but Bruno believes by just telling children only on side of life you are not preparing them for the real world. Fairy tales play an important part in helping children grow up, letting them see the good and bad parts of the world. Some might not believe this, but they cannot deny that life is hard and not everyone is nice.

1.Almost every child grows up hearing, watching, and even reading fairly tales. I am no exception to this; from the very beginning of my child hood I have had the images of princesses and far away kingdoms with wicked stepmothers and prince charming. As I have gotten older my view of fairy tales have also changed; moving on to not only the Disney version of fairy tales but also the not so nice versions of my favorite stories growing up.

As I child I had an uncountable amount of Disney movies that I would watch on a regular basses and because of this I believe that my imagination expanded greatly as a child. My first five years of life I was an only child so with the help of fairy tales I was able to entertain myself for hours pretending to be my favorite characters in my favorite movies. In addition, I would also come up with my own fairy tales that I would tell and sometimes act or to my parents; which I think plays a part in me wanting to be a fictional writer because from a very young age fairy tales inspired me to make up my own stories as well.

Now that I am older I see fairy tales in a different way. Not only do I still look at them and remember a wonderful childhood; I also see them as something that has been modified and changed throughout history. For example, I have learned that some of my favorite film versions of fairy tales are different from there formal written version. This was very surprising and also interesting, which has made me increasingly interested in seeing the changes that were made and finding out why is was changed.

Growing up with fairly tales was a wonderful experience that has helped develop my creativity today; they where a way for me to entertain myself and even some of my family members. Now that I am older not only do I still love fairy tales, but I also want to look at the written version of them as well and see how they have changed throughout the years.

1. A fairy tale is a story, mostly directed towards a younger audience, which teaches a moral or lesson of some sort. Most fairy tales include magic or a supernatural force, making the impossible possible.

2. In the past four years I have become a more active reader which then lead to me wanting to become an author myself; dew to this I try to write as much a possible on a regular basis. I mostly focus on writing stories that are fiction and deal with real life situations any person could encounter in life. I also have an interest in writing supernatural works of fiction, but have not came up with any ideas at this time. The main reason I write is because I enjoy creating something that is totally out of my imagination, it’s something that belongs to me 100%. At this time the only writing ritual I have is listening to music while I write. By doing this it allows me to focus more on what I am trying to say and sometimes I even get ideas from the songs I’m listening to. The main challenge I have with writing is trying to get inspiration while I write. Sometimes I suffer from major writers block where I find myself staring at an empty screen for 30 minutes ,but once I figure out what I want to write about it usually flows right on to the page in a matter of minutes. When it comes to writing I feel that my strength is beginning able to get my point across but in a fun and interesting way which is why my paper might stick out more than others. My weakness would probably be that I sometimes repeat myself which can make a paper seem boring. In addition, I also have trouble finding the right words to use to describe certain things and events causing my writing to lack sophisticated language.
